Does anyone know of a source or sources of closeout/deep-discounted arts and crafts supplies?
Please don’t say E-bay, because most of it is retail or almost retail price – often above retail, especially with some people’s inflated “postage and handling” fees.
I am looking for a source of art supplies that lists items from 60-90% off retail either through a catalog or online.

“The first axiom for camp is… do not make yourself uncomfortable for want of things to which you are accustomed,” advised The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook in 1890 to high-born Brits living in India, most of which England had by that point colonized through a succession of wars, or military “campaigns,” throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. With Christmas only a month away now is the time to start making your crepe paper Christmas Cards. Many people think that crepe paper is only used for flowers. When in fact the paper can be used to make several things. The colorful assortment of crepe paper will allow you to make nearly any type Christmas card you can think of.
In this article I’ll provide you with a few wonderful crepe paper Christmas card ideas you can make. The items you will need include; crepe paper, shears, ribbon, clear drying glue and a ruler. For each project you will need a few additional items as well that you may already have or can pick up at a craft store.
Christmas cards – To make a crepe paper Christmas card you will need all of the supplies listed above and a few additional ones; cardstock, old Christmas cards with pictures on them, green and red glitter and green, red, silver or gold curling ribbon. To assemble the card use your ruler to measure the cardstock to the size you want, you can have a single card or a double card (one that folds in half.)
Cover the cardstock in crepe paper using the clear drying glue to attach it. If you want to write a personal message be sure to leave a small section of the card free of the crepe paper. Next cut out a design from an old Christmas card and glue it to the front of the crepe paper covered card stock. You can add a little glitter or a small ribbon bow if you like or anything else you can think of.
Some people also chose to substitute the “old Christmas card” picture with a family picture or a picture of their child or children or a hand colored picture by a child. The last idea is nice for grandparents and family members who do not get to see the child very often. You can also enclose an updated picture or even two of the child.
You can also make a Christmas card in the shape of a holiday symbol such as; a wreath, Santa Clause, Christmas tree, star, gingerbread boy or girl, candy cane, snowman, or any other item you associate with Christmas. All you need is a large metal cookie cutter or a paper pattern. Using the cardstock cut out the shape and cover the front of it with the crepe paper. You can decorate it any way you like. You may want to give a snowman, gingerbread boy or girl wiggly eyes or make tiny little balls out of the paper for the Christmas tree to represent bulbs, a wreath can be decorate with different colors of glitter. Use the back to write a personal little note or attach a photo.
Crepe paper Christmas cards are so easy to make and the recipients will adore them. Don’t forget to add a little bow made from curly ribbon. These cards can also be made in a miniature form and used as gift tags!

Do you have to have a permit/liscense to sell baked goods at a craft fair?
I have some old recipee’s and new packaging ideas for some deserts that I’d like to start selling. I’m thinking of testing the idea at some craft fairs in my area (Alabama). Does anyone know if I would have to be liscensed with the health dept? I wasn’t sure if you had some type of grace period or quantity level before you were required to have a seperate kitchen etc. Thanks
You will need a business license witha tax ID # (a social security # works if you are self-employed) and a seller’s permit. You may also need a permit from your county health department – regulations on this vary by area so call them and check.
Last but not least, you’ll need to rent space from the organizers of the event – they will assign you a booth. Every fair is different – some provide tables/electrical power/etc. but many do not. Again, call and check with the event organizer.

When you first start your online business, the first and most obvious question you will ask yourself is…what am I going to sell? Points to consider when deciding the answer to that question are:
· Is it light and easy to ship? · Is it a digital good that is downloaded (e-book or software)? · Is it perishable or fragile? · Does it have to be seen and held (designer fabrics, perhaps) · Is there enough demand to make your venture profitable? · Does it have little competition from large online companies (niche products)?
The last two characteristics are the ones that can be hard to pin down. Here is a generally accepted method of arriving at an idea of how heavy the demand and competition is for a product.
If you have a special interest in some products that meet the above criteria, great, but don’t limit your investigation just to items you like. You are looking for a niche product with relatively good demand (enough to make it profitable), but without heavy competition.
One way to see what the demand is for products you are interested in is to look at search engines to see how frequently people search for the product you are considering.
The result of all this research should be that one or more products will fit into a niche market – products with some demand, and relatively little supply. For the best results, focus on one niche product category, and offer a wide selection. That way, you can become the best online source for that particular category. For example, instead of offering general craft supplies, offer the widest possible selection of needlepoint kits. This strategy will also allow you to rank higher in search engines because you can optimize your pages for fewer, more specific, keywords.

If you sell crafts, then why not create gifts under 5 dollars? I know you think this is probably not worth bothering with, but this can be a great business model for this time of year.
Many people are feeling the pinch of this years economy, and some people I have talked to are not even bothering with gifts this year! So, you may have to appeal to a different market.
Instead of creating elaborate and expensive products, why not consider smaller items. Not only do adults shop at these craft shows for something unique but children also shop for their gifts as well. A friend of mine, gives her older children (10-12 years) some cash, and tells them to go off and shop when they go to a craft show. As a crafter, that has sold in many shows, I can tell you, there are a lot of kids in that age group shopping.
Here are 5 ideas:
1. Christmas ornaments, that are unique, but don’t take much time or materials to make, have a small Christmas tree and hang your ornaments on the tree.
2. Small craft kits, you can create from your leftover supplies. These are a great way for people to venture into crafting. Such as a package to make a tree ornament etc, in a small zip lock bag.
3. Craft CD’s.. You can get creative here. Spend the time and create a CD of craft ideas, and some of your own craft patterns. It will take some time in the beginning, but you can make and sell many copies of this CD and sell it for 5 dollars. Create a decorative cover for your CD and copy it. You could have a printed version in a binder, to give the customer an idea of what is on the CD. These make great gifts. The beauty of this, is you can sell many copies, and CD blanks are quite cheap now.
4. Grab bags, of supplies. Such as scraps for quilting, or enough leftover wool to make a scarf and directions. Leftover embroidery thread, and some embroidery cloth. Go through all your bins, and put together some items that can create a small craft, or like with like. This is a great way to use up your leftover supplies, that you were not going to use anyways. This is especially good for beading, and sewing. This gives your customer a chance to try a craft without the big expense of full package supplies.
One year, I had changed the type of paint I was using, and had many bottles of acrylic paint, that had been opened and partially used, but were still good. I then purchased a few bare wood items from the dollar store, one for each kit, such as frames, boxes, canvases, and created a craft kit for kids. I sold these for 5 dollars. I got rid of my leftover supplies, and yet someone else got to create something with them. I put them in see through zip lock bags, and had them in a large basket. I labeled the basket my “bargain basket”.
Everyone loves to look in my “bargain basket” This attracted people, and it also help me sell many of my other more expensive items. The “bargain basket” was a good leader and attracted many kids, who were looking for gifts under 5 dollars.
5. Make a DVD of you creating a craft. Most digital cameras can make movies now. A “how to” movie, and put a picture of your finished craft on the front of the DVD. Something simple. You can really put your computer to good use here. Once again, you can sell many copies of this for 5 dollars each.
Hopefully this give you some ideas for gifts under 5 dollars. As a crafter, you want to offer and sell your best crafts at craft shows, but sometimes you have to appeal to a younger crowd (kids) and also to people wanting something different for gifts, and don’t want to spend too much.
Having a “bargain basket” at a craft show, does NOT make you look cheap, it actually attracts people, and everyone loves a bargain. Plus this also helps pay the rent for the show. Those 5 dollars here and there add up quickly.

Making crafts can be a lot of fun. But there are some other areas that have to be covered if you plan on networking your item to people in your community. Explore your options when attempting to network. If you don’t know where to begin, try reading plenty of books on the subject or talk to friends who may know a bit more about the subject.
When starting out, create a mailer to be sent out to people in the community. This can consist of a flyer, short glossy magazine or news article. Whatever you feel is best. You can have them sent out as a free mailer, or you may want to go with an opt-in mailing. This is where your customers sign up for a free mailer about your item. This is the best way to avoid wasting paper and stamps. But you may ask, “How do I get the addresses?” There are several avenues you can take. 1) Anytime someone makes a purchase, ask if they would like to be added to the free mailer. If they’re impressed with your crafts, more than likely you’ll list will be pretty long, 2) when attending a local craft show, have a clip board with pen that people can sign up for. They may not buy something right then, but if they’re interested in your craft, they will sign up. Collect Name, address, city, state and zip code. You can even make room for an email address. On average, a mailer should be sent out twice a year. If you do send too much information, too often, it may end up in the trash.
Placing flyers around your community is also a good networking tool. Check with local businesses to see if it’s ok to post a flyer in the window. You might want to stick with businesses that sell craft supplies, clothing or anything that can be connected with your item. When creating your flyer, put lots of color to catch people’s attention. You can input pictures on the flyers as well as an average price.
Contact your Chambers of Commerce. They help promote businesses by having meetings and items displays. This is a good way to introduce your self to the community. You can also find out what’s happening in your community such as local craft show days and times.
Stop by your local consignment store or boutique. These are great ways to get your craft out there. Generally, they will receive a percentage of the sales. Of course, this will be discussed before hand. When approaching the business owner, dress professional. Bring a sample of your item in with a list of prices. Also expect to sell in large quantities and for a discounted price. Store owners generally don’t pay full price for bulk items. Come prepared to give a price to the owner, but make sure you’re making a profit from it as well. If the store owner isn’t sold on your product, ask if it would be ok to leave business card or flyers behind with a sample of your work. If potential buyers take an interest and ask about the craft enough times, the owner may see the want for it and will be contacting you.
If you’re not one to get out there and start marketing your item, you can even hire a sales representative. They generally collect a percentage of what they sell. They can do it the old fashion way and walk door to door telling people of your product or they can visit local businesses and display your product. Make sure they are educated on your item. People make ask questions to the sales representative and you don’t want them to reply with a blank stare.
Try your local church. Churches have many functions throughout the year. Some even hold small craft shows for the community. Word of mouth is also a great way to network in your church. Churches are small communities that once the word is out, it travels fast.
If you’re selling an item that is wearable, wear it! Things like hair bows should be displayed in your daughter’s hair. If they’re unique, people will begin asking about them. If your selling handmade clothes, try making a holiday pattern and wear them before the season starts and see how many people want to know where you got it.
Whatever route you take, get out there. Even avenues you wouldn’t think to explore, try it. You never know, you might just make a sale.
The most noticeable item in any backyard foundry is the furnace. This is no surprise really, because without the furnace the entire metal casting operation would be nonexistent. The furnace can take really any size and form depending upon the need and budget of the metal caster. What really makes home metal casting furnaces really unique is how many of them come into creation.
Sure there are plenty of companies that will gladly sell furnaces for the hobby metal caster and while this can be a viable solution to your furnace needs many metal casters prefer another method.
Making your own furnace is not as far fetched as it may seem and if you already a Do It Yourselfer, chances are you will have the needed skills and tools in your workshop or garage already. There are a variety of reasons why people make their own furnaces. The most common reason is fulfilling a need.
Many hobbyist and metal workers find out, to their dismay, that the local commercial foundries can not make the needed part or if they do, they feel the need to charge an outrageous sum. Not to mention the fact that the traditional methods of metal casting is quickly becoming forgotten as the industry turns to electric furnaces. So many hobbyists find that constructing their own furnace is an absolute necessity and a great way to preserve a piece of craftsman history. The artisans who use metal casting to create sculptures and other pieces find that making their own furnace grants them a greater amount of control over the entire process. This is actually how many people get into metal casting to begin with.
Most likely, your first furnace is going to be a small and rather simple one. There is really no need to run before you can walk when it comes to something that will be using intense heat and melting iron which can be rather dangerous.
Home made furnaces have been constructed from coffee cans to trash cans or sheet metal welded together. While there are a few components that really should be bought like the retractor to line the furnace walls which should be resistant to high temperature for a prolonged period of time along with special connectors and regulators, most of the furnace can be created in your own home. You should be able to find most of the components that you can not make at hardware stores or plumbing supply stores for relatively cheap.
Along with the furnace parts you will also need to buy a crucible which will hold the metal as it melts along with the appropriate tools that you will use to handle the crucible. While you are at it you might as well buy all the safety equipment like gloves, protective eye wear, and leather shoes. There is other safety equipment that you will need depending on the type of work and the type of furnace you are going to make.
Most likely, your first furnace is going to be a simple cupola variation. The cupola furnace which is going to resemble a smoke stack is a simple design and is relatively easy to make for anyone with mild craft skill. This type of furnace will not require a crucible since you will be able to pour the molten metal from the furnace itself into a ladle that can then be poured into the mold.
DIY casting furnaces are a great way to connect yourself with your metal casting work giving you more control. While building the furnace can be complicated at first, once you delve into it you will find the experience enjoyable and fascinating.

Some of the decorative bird cages are fine to use as a home for your bird but some of them, depending on the size and the materials the cage is designed out of is some of the determining factors of how it can be used. Although the antique bird cages are very nice to look at they should never be used as a home for the bird. One of the factors in both types of cages will be what the cage is coated or painted with.
The use of a bird cage as a type of decoration can be applied in several different ways. The use of vines or flowers in the cage as a wall hanging or a centerpiece is a very nice way of displaying the cage. Even taking one cage and cutting it into, filling and hanging both side gives a dramatic effect. While the use as a centerpiece or a plant holder is very nice too. The cages can be manufactured out of several different materials, the most common being metal, acrylic, stainless steel, iron or even a bamboo bird cage. Just be imaginative as you use the cages.
The cages can even be representative of different regions of the world. The Tuscan, the Arabian and the Oriental just to name a few. There are also architectural designs such as the domes and arches. Some of the Victorian cages are popular with either the marble tops or gold trims. Some of these different styles and designs can be found in some of the pet stores, department stores or in some of the retail stores. These cages will have a wide range of prices, depending on the style, design and what the cage is manufactured out of.
The antique bird cages are very dangerous of your live bird. Most of these was treated with different paints or finishes that have toxic chemicals in them. Lead and zinc are the most common that chemicals that will be found. There is no amount of scraping, paint removal or sanding that can make the cage safe for your bird. Most birds love to nibble and chew, so do not put them in this type environment. Another danger to the antique bird cage is the seed guard mesh. Most of these was crafted out of lead. The zinc can cause life threating anemia and the lead will cause devastating neurological damage to the bird.
Another common problem to both of these cages is the lack of room inside the cages. A bird needs room to stretch out their wings and do a little walking for some exercise. Also just the bird cage supplies will take up some of the room. But used as a centerpiece or on a bird cage stand, these cages do look great.

The decorative bird cage and the antique bird cage be be a chemical and toxic deathtrap for your bird. Used as a centerpiece, wall mount, or even a flower pot may be a better idea then using as a bird cage. After placing all the bird cage supplies in the cages, there may not be enough room left for the bird.

Stores and florists spend a great deal of time, money and effort promoting their products as perfect for Valentine’s Day. This is done for good reason as most people turn to commercially available products on Valentine’s Day to give a great gift to their loved ones.
However, with a little effort you may find you can give your partner a really great gift on Valentine’s Day which comes straight from your heart. This can be done in the form of a homemade gift. Despite what you may be thinking it does not take a great deal of time or talent to make these great gifts. This article will provide a few ideas for homemade gifts you can give to your loved one on Valentine’s Day.
A scrapbook is one of the most obvious homemade gifts you can give to your partner on Valentine’s Day. It is also one of the easiest homemade gifts you can make and also one of the gifts which is most likely to be greatly appreciated by your partner. This is a great combination if you want to give your partner a spectacular gift on Valentine’s Day.
To make a great scrapbook start out by selecting the pictures you want to use in the scrapbook. You can select pictures of each of you individually, pictures of the two of you together, pictures of places the two of you have visited together or any combination of the pictures previously mentioned.
Once you select a series of pictures you really like there will likely be an obvious theme for the scrapbook. Once this theme emerges you can search for the scrapbook as well as accessories for the scrapbook such as stickers, ribbons or other graphics.
Homemade candles are another great gift you can give your partner for Valentine’s Day. Making candles is actually quite simple. You can find kits in craft supply stores which will not only include everything you need to make a great candle or two but also provide you with simple step by step instructions on how to melt the wax, insert the wick, pour the candle and allow the candle to set before releasing it from the mold.
Also, there will likely be the opportunity to use dyes and perfumes to create a candle of a customized color and scent. When adding color or scent to a candle, care should be taken to add the dye or perfume at the appropriate time for the best results.

With the technological advancements being made, many of us would be surprised to learn that we can do a lot of these things on our own computers at home. work on creativity.art cards and put in what is special to each of them..if you got none make a tape for each saying what you appreciate/like especially about them, and do one for Jesus too.
the prayer that helped me become a gift and have the best gift, as a Jew when i saw Jesus was the promised messiah to die rejected for my sins as the lamb of God (Isaiah 52:13-53:12)
I prayed “Help me Jesus, i am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and be my best friend, amen”
He spoke from heaven and promised his love and that he knocks on our heart door to come in forgive sins (even one lie) and be our best friend to fellowship with us and us with him. Revelation 1:1 & 3:19&20
and a pair of shoes old not needed’
take a pair of shoes and spray them with gold and then outline in silver
The Christmas shoes by Bob Carlisle
It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two
I’m really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing around like little boys do
And in his hands he held
A pair of shoes
And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn’t believe what I heard him say
Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see, she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Momma meets Jesus, tonight.
They counted pennies for what seem like years
And cashier says son there’s not enough here
He searches is pockets franticly
And he turned and he looked at me
And he said Momma made Christmas good at our house
Most years she just did without
Tell me Sir
What am I gonna do?
Some how I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes
So I layed the money down
I just had to help him out
And I’ll never forget
The look on his face
When he said Momma’s gonna look so great.
Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my Momma please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see, she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful,
If Momma meets Jesus tonight.
I knew I caught a glimpse of heavens love as he thanked me and ran out.
I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me
What Christmas is all about
Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It’s Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there’s not much time
You see she’s been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Momma meets Jesus tonight
I want her to look beautiful
If Momma meets Jesus tonight

No, nor will He cast even so much as one of them. Man has his castoffs, but God has none; for His choice is unchangeable, and His love is everlasting. None can find out a single person whom God has forsaken after having revealed Himself savingly to him.

We all love crafts! They are a great way for kids to learn fine motor skills, and express themselves creatively, but being crafty can put a strain on your pocketbook at times. Going to the store to buy supplies for each and every craft project, just isn’t practical. Which is why, it’s important to learn how to come up with kids craft ideas on a budget. Consider using items and supplies that you already have on hand, for fun and simple impromptu projects.
There are so many items that often get overlooked when it comes to crafting. Think back to your own childhood. The days of toilet paper roll projects and egg cartons, should come rolling back. Remember how fun it was to create something beautiful out of something so plain? Help your kids relieve that same joy and pride with these simple tips and craft projects.
Recycle and Re-Use
Teaching your kids about recycling is a really good life lesson, so why not integrate craft time and science by re-using common household items? Paper bags, egg cartons and other goodies get a second life when they are forever treasured in the form of a craft project. Encourage your kids to come up with other household items that can be used for craft projects, you may be surprised at the things that they come up with!
Here are just a few of the materials that you can recycle, discover, or re-use for your own craft projects:
-Egg Cartons
-Grocery Bags (paper or plastic)
-Cardboard inserts from packaging and boxes
-CD’s
-Old denim or fabric swatches
-T-shirts that no longer fit
-Used birthday cards or bags
-Wrapping paper
-Toilet paper and paper towel rolls
-Plastic soda bottles
-Cans (use caution with sharp edges)
-Things found in nature: A rock, leaves, sticks, etc.
Gravel Art
Here is a great little project that uses items that you should have lying around! Enjoy!
Materials Needed:
-Large Cardboard Box
-Small pieces of gravel (You will need quite a bit)
-String or Yarn
-Pencil
-Simple Coloring Book or personal drawing
-White glue in squeeze bottle
-Scissors
-Crayons (optional)
Instructions
1. Wash and rinse the gravel in a kitchen strainer. Spread out on towels to dry.
2. On your cardboard, use the pencil to make an outline of a simple drawing.
3. With the glue, trace over the outline.
4. Press string or yard onto the glue lines, cutting where necessary to form corners and angles.
5. Glue gravel onto the picture filling the spaces. You can use all one color, or use different colors for different areas.
6. If you wish to have a background, use crayons to draw and color one in.
Use Your Imagination
Once you get the hang of coming up with kids craft ideas, you will never go back to the store bought kits. There is so much more creativity and freedom that goes along with recycling and re-using common household items.
